FAQs

What is Reader's Cup?

Readers cup is a book quiz competition.

Students read a selection of books throughout the term and then, on a designated day, are asked a series of questions in a similar format to a trivia quiz.

Our College competes in the Gold Coast Catholic Primary Schools competition and the Children's Book Council - Queensland Branch competition.

What are Literature Circles?

Literature Circles are a reading activity held each year in a number of year levels.  Students are able to choose a book from a given selection which they will read during a set time.  Popular titles have included:

  • Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz
  • Painted Love Letters by Catherine Bateson
  • The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
  • Ice Station by Matthew Reilly

Students discuss their books within groups and create items of work which complement their understanding of the novels.

What is Lexile?

Scholastic's Lexile Framework is a way to match students to books.  Students complete a Lexile test online which provides a measure of students' reading ability and comprehension.  This information can be used to match students with books at their Lexile Level and in their interest areas. Reading at this 'target' level offers sufficient challenge without frustration.  The Chiara staff are currently in the process of giving many books in the library a Lexile number which students can see via a coloured sticker on their spine.
